Podcast

Fourth week of learning. Madam explained about podcast to us, it is a familiar word but this is the first time I am really aware about what it is. So, what is podcast? Podcast is a digital audio file made available online or in a simpler word it is an audio show available on the internet. The named came from IPod(a MP3 player) + broadcast. We have to make our own podcast but before that, Madam assigned us to listen to a podcast and jot down anything that we got from it. It is important for us to learn on how to make or record a good podcast.

Now moving on to the podcast I chose from a site, podbay.fm I chose a podcast named The Simply Scary Podcast, Season 1: Episode 4. The title of the podcast is "Doorways To The Unseen". While screening all the podcast I could have seen from the site, I am more curious about this podcast in horror genre as I would like to know how the stories would go and will it be a good one or nah. The podcast has 3 featured stories and I listened only up to two stories and each story finished around 30-35minutes. I fell asleep at the third story anddd aha! I got a new idea. Listening to a podcast can be a new version of sleeping pills😪, for me surely.

Back to reflecting on the podcast. I really love the theme and how the crew made the podcast believable especially the host's voice was so fitting. The host, G. M. Danielson led the show well and I am happy that they also used the right spooky background music.

The podcast or maybe I could say a storytelling that I listened to has the same writer for all three stories and his name is James Dermond. On this episode, three of the stories are The Drowned Man, Grandfather's Cane and Returned to Dust. Even by reading the title you could get the scary vibes right. The first story, The Drowned Man is about two young women who went for a trip at a house near by a lake. One of them, April got a dream about the lake. In the dream, she went and swam at the lake and suddenly she felt something dragged her down and kept on pulling her down. She woke up and saw a man figure staring at her. She could see that the man is bloated. She quickly got down her bed and knelt beside her bed. She prayed for the figure to go away. In another dream, her friend, Jessica was drowning and screaming for help. One man appeared and went into the water to save her. He saved her, but then he was exhausted and gasping for air. He asked for her help. It felt so real but she learnt that it was just a nightmare. The next day, everything went as usual at the house, Jessica went for a swim at the lake and April also had her own activity inside the house. When Jessica returned, she tried to tell something to April but decided to tell her tomorrow morning since April looked so tired. The next morning, April felt weird that Jessica did not knock her door for breakfast. She went to Jessica's room to find her dead body drenched in water.

The next story, Grandfather's Cane tells about Megan who just lost her grandfather, Blint. At the funeral, almost all family members gathered to send and see grandpa for the last time. The church is an old church that contained a lot of old sculptures with Gothic cathedral. Grandma was the last person who stayed with him saying that she will miss him. Grandfather Blint has a tall and big figure opposite to grandma who got a small figure. They went outside and Megan saw an old man just across the road and he was looking down. He got slump shoulder and he was wearing a dark formal attire. He then gazed directly to Megan, making eye contact with a terror look. Right after Megan realized that the old man is her grandfather, he disappeared. Everyone gathered at grandma's that night. They had chats on a few topics until they finally talked about Megan's accommodation since she will enter a college soon. Her mom suggested Megan to just stay with grandma as the college is near to house and she can avoid all sorts of bad influence at the hostel. Megan finally lived with grandma and one day as she was helping grandma arranging some old stuffs, she found a cane. It was grandfather's cane. That night, as she was about to sleep, she heard a sound of footstep with a cane climbing the stairs. The footstep passed by grandma's room and stop in front of her room. It tried to open the doorknob but luckily Megan already locked the door. Anddd to be continue haha.

Interesting isn't it? The story managed in making some of my body hairs stood ahah.

Listening to the podcast made me learnt a lot of things. I learnt that planning is a must, from what story you are going to make and what objective that you want to achieve from the podcast. A clear goal makes your podcast has more focus and the listeners can surely feel it too. You also have to be a well organized person. Your podcast has to have an attractive opening, a great content and a sweet ending. That is all for this week.

Third week?

Busy? Yeah we are getting busy and all but it is not a problem as long as you enjoy doing it. Now let's get to what I have learnt for last week. The first topic for the week is Search Engines & Online Database.Search engines basically is a program or anything you can call it where you type in any keywords that interest you and walah anything related to the keywords would come out. The most common search engine for Malaysian of course everybody knows it, Google. Others would be Bing, Yahoo, Firefox, Safari and more.

There are two types of search engine and they are specialized search engine and meta search engine. Specialized search engine focuses on some particular topics or field and it cannot be found in general purpose search engines. For example Google Scholar, Academia and Pipl.com. While meta search engine is a search tool that gives results based on the results that could be found from other search engines. You could get all sorts of results and you could try it by using dogpile.com and metacrawler.

Actually, I am quite amused with the internet. You thought that you are good enough to know Google but there are much more to it in internet. Is this the realisation moment where people said that the more you learn, the more you feel small. I guess, yeah.

And.. let us not talk about the dark web and whatsoever. Full stop.

Another topic that I learnt called Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) in ESL. It is any form of communication or interaction between two or more people via separate computers. Why ESL? Because we got to learn and use its function to learn language.

There are two types of CMC. They are Asynchronous CMC and Synchronous CMC. Asynchronous CMC can be refer to delay or not real time. It is not expected to reply immediately. The examples are emails or the comment section in any social medias. While Synchronous CMC happens in real time and it can be exchanged and replied immediately (often expected to). It allows direct communication such as internet chat rooms, messenger and video or audio conferencing.

Next, CMC & Long Distance Learning. This topic is a new info for me, ya I might be late, but now I know. This topic could be shorten to teacher and learner interacting without being in the same location. The examples are video conferencing, e-tutoring and e-lectures. This proves that everything can be done with just a click.

Another useful topic would be Collaborative Learning. It helps in enhancing peer interactions and group work. One of the most popular example would be Google Docs, and I have to admit that this lecture is so so helpful and now I can easily collaborate with my group mates in finishing our group assignment. Just I wish I knew it much earlier🙂

Second week!

This week, the second week we learnt about CALL or it is also known as Computer-assisted language learning. We learnt about the history of CALL and how it started. It does have a lot of benefits for both language learners and educators.
I also learnt that it is not an easy work for anyone to develop a programme. The programme can only be held or started after a plan is carefully designed by some professionals. The professionals include subject specialist, a programmer, a graphic designer (to make it interesting of course), photographer, sound engineer, instructional designer and more. The advantage of CALL of course it is a very efficient way to teach a language and the disadvantage is it could increase the number of passive students.

In the next meeting, I was delighted when my lecturer introduce this site called canva.com. It is really helping and really user friendly. Designing, decorating can never be easier(nah that is an exaggerate statement). But surely the site would be one of my favourites.

Last but not least

I do not have anything to offer but yeah you may eat the cake(↑) . Dear blog visitor, I would like to announce that this will be my la...
